Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy Perspective

Literally meaning "nurse the soul," psychotherapy is both a modern science and ancient art. I tend to emphasize the "art" piece.  All of our lives are works of art of the highest order. I see myself as a "soul nurse."

Psychotherapy is a process of self and life discovery based on mutual, sacred trust. My experience is that people who become more accepting and loving of all of themselves are more capable of finding contentment in self, others and life itself. All of you is worthwhile if you are in right relationship to it.

For some the psychotherapeutic journey is brief while others engage in therapy for years; some make life-long commitments to this contemplative journey. I tend to see people over longer periods of time and work with folks who see therapy as an essential part of their lives.  Although many of the clients I see have some "psychiatric diagnosis," most are highly functioning folks.  Those seeing therapy as "problem solving" are often disappointed.  Clients seeking a shift in perspective and a journey to deeper appreciation of soul are often richly rewarded.

Theoretical Orientation

My approach to therapy is eclectic meaning that I utilize a variety of therapeutic models.   I work primarily from archetypal, transpersonal, mythopoetic, existential and traditional psychodynamic constructs.   To a lesser degree, I use cognitive theories.

I combine a number of approaches. These include depth psychotherapy, the extensive use of poetry and storytelling, as well as some ceremonial work. I do not provide problem solving services, but, rather, journey with you to the foundations of your soul. Unlike many therapists today I consistently utilize a particular methodology rather than adopt a theoretical approach based on solving some problem or abating symptoms.   My approach is highly personal and not for everyone.

There are numerous authors who have shaped my psychotherapeutic approach.   You may click the link here to go directly to my Suggested Reading List.

The Therapeutic Relationship

My therapy style is direct and interactive, a collaboration of your soul and mine.   Each of us will be affected by this relationship.   Therefore, based on my training and experience, I assess/intuit whether I can enter into the therapeutic relationship with you; you must decide whether you can commit to the journey with me.

Early in the therapeutic relationship I tend to be Socratic and somewhat didactic.   I will introduce "maps" which will help you look at the terrain of Life and your life in different ways.   As the relationship progresses, I have less to say and will emphasize the reflective and contemplative aspects of our relationship and the therapeutic journey.

Clients Served

I work with adults, ages 21 and older; I do not see children or adolescents.   I practice individual, group and couples psychotherapy.

Consultation

In addition to psychotherapy, supervision and speaking I provide a variety of consultation services.  These are primarily services to other therapists and services to organizations.

I work extensively with other therapists, providing second opinions and adjunctive therapy.   Some examples would include:

*Work on a specific issue with a client while they continue to maintain a different, primary therapeutic relationship

*Consultation visit when a therapist and client feel blocked or stagnant in their work

*Providing adjunctive therapy

  • Group work for those in individual or couples therapy
  • Individual work for folks engaged in couples counseling

I also offer a variety of consultation services for organizations, institutions and ecclesiastical bodies.   These can be one time, episodic or ongoing.   I particularly enjoy bringing storytelling and poetry to these consultations.   This provides many groups with a unique and highly effective experience of looking at issues in different, creative ways.   Some of the consultations I have provided are:

  • Team building
  • Motivational workshops
  • Strategic plan review
  • Assistance with group formation
  • Various psycho-educational presentations, groups and retreats

Whether you are a therapist interested in adjunctive work for your client or represent an organization in need of assistance, I would be happy to discuss your needs with no obligation or cost to you.   Please call 404-314-8325 to schedule a complimentary one hour consultation.
